Guidance for Internships

Guidance for GSICE students pursuing an experiential opportunity (such as a full- or part-time internship, consulting workshop, etc.):

  1. Before you apply for an internship: Students who have completed the GSICE course can consult the 2020 GSICE Guidebook at any time for an overview of forms and procedures. You may also wish to schedule a career counseling appointment to discuss your application materials. It is very important that international students consult with an advisor in the International Students and Scholars Office to determine their specific situation with regards to pursing an internship.
  2. When you have an internship offer: GSICE students who have received an internship offer should fill out the internship onboarding form before their internship starts. Depending on the specifics of the internship and the student's UCSF status*, GSICE students may need to complete and electronically submit some or all the below forms. As part of the onboarding form, GSICE students will be strongly encouraged to schedule a career counseling appointment to discuss which forms they will need to complete for their specific situation.
  3. After your internship: Please fill out the internship completion form (coming soon) to let us know how your internship went! You may also wish to schedule a career counseling appointment to reflect on your internship and decide on next steps.

For UCSF students who did not participate in the GSICE Program, GSICE staff members are only able to offer limited guidance. It is the student's responsibility to determine which forms need to be completed before they go on their internship*. We suggest that students first reach out to their graduate program coordinator to seek guidance on the which forms they will need to complete before the internship begins. Students may also schedule a career counseling appointment with an OCPD career counselor.

*International students should consult with an advisor in the International Students and Scholars Office before seeking an internship.
